Microsoft Live@edu

Live@edu provides students, staff, faculty, and alumni long-term, primary e-mail addresses and other applications they can use to collaborate and communicate online. Microsoft regularly updates and adds to Live@edu services, so your institution can continually expand the set of services you offer students and alumni. And students will be using Microsoft products similar to those used in many workplaces, helping to prepare them for jobs after college.

• Save time and money. Live@edu is a free service for K–12 and Higher Education institutions. Because it’s a hosted service, you don’t have to worry about ongoing maintenance costs or updating systems.
• Give students an e-mail address with the university domain. Offer students a unique e-mail mailbox that they can keep after they graduate. E-mail accounts include an email inbox through Outlook Live with 10GB inbox and 20MB attachments—along with spam filtering, calendaring, and other features.

• Help keep your students safe online. Live@edu includes features and policies to protect the privacy of your students’ communications. For example, the e-mail services include anti-phishing technologies and SSL-encrypted authentication, and Live@edu policies prohibit third-party banner ads in e-mail and the sharing of information with third parties unless the student opts in. • Stay in touch with alumni. Offer current and future alumni an e-mail address with your school brand that they can keep for life and use to stay connected with your institution and with fellow alumni.

Undergraduates and the University of Pennsylvania College of Arts and Sciences were dissatisfied with their school’s e-mail service. School administrators and students decided to offer the option of using Windows Live@edu. The free hosted communication and collaboration services from Microsoft provided the storage space, messaging, calendaring, and file-sharing tools that students need. See the full case study.

Hinds did not provide an e-mail service for its students, and this lack hindered reliable communication among faculty, staff, and students. Hinds knew that its students wanted a Web-based e-mail service in addition to personal spaces where they could share documents and blogs.
