Customer Scenario

Most organizations recognize that virtualization and cloud computing can deliver tremendous benefits in terms of cost savings, flexibility, and efficiencies. But virtualization introduces new challenges—particularly for companies wanting to extend deployment from the client to the data center and, ultimately, to the cloud. Topping the list are the complexity and resource-intensiveness of migrating from physical to virtual, or from one virtual platform to another; the increased chances of service disruptions during unexpected downtime and planned service and migration periods; and the difficulty of managing sprawling, siloed technology environments that include physical and virtual resources from a variety of vendors.

Many companies that have deployed virtualization quickly become overwhelmed by these challenges and by the high costs of acquiring and maintaining the required technologies, and training IT staff to support them. Others defer deployments altogether. But they run the risk of being stuck with an inflexible, proprietary infrastructure that renders them unable to support changing business needs. The need for efficiency, easily scalable solutions, and insights into technology and data is also driving customers to look for ways to optimize their Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server implementations. The bottom line is this: Organizations need a way to reduce the complexities and costs of deployments, quickly drive greater value from their investments, simplify infrastructure management, and set the foundation for cloud computing.

HP + Microsoft Solution

HP and Microsoft are partnering to take the complexity, risk and cost out of virtualization, management, and application deployments. With comprehensive, integrated solutions from the client to the data center to the cloud, and unified management that supports converged, heterogeneous physical and virtual resources—complemented by world-class consulting and services—we eliminate the need for companies to configure their own solutions, and help them accelerate the return on investment of their technology infrastructure.

Initial solutions include:

  • New solutions based on HP Converged Infrastructure teamed with Microsoft Hyper-V and applications, businesses can decrease implementation time of multi-tiered IT services from weeks or months to under two hours. They can also decrease unplanned downtime by 77 percent while reducing network and cabling infrastructure costs by 66 percent. These solutions allow customers to achieve a service-based infrastructure that can serve as the foundation for cloud computing.

  • Heterogeneous data center management solutions improve administrator productivity and simplify management through deep integration of HP’s Insight Software and Business Technology Optimization software portfolio with Microsoft’s System Center suite. Customers can automate the provisioning, monitoring and ongoing maintenance of both virtualized and physical IT services.

  • Virtualization “Smart Bundles” for small-midsize businesses (SMBs) simplify the purchase, setup and maintenance of a virtualized infrastructure. Smart Bundles, based on HP server, storage, and networking solutions coupled with Microsoft Windows Server and Insight Software make it easy to purchase required hardware, virtualization, and management components in a single cost-effective package. Add Microsoft System Center Essentials and HP Operations Center solutions to unify management of hardware, OS, and applications.

Over the next three years, HP and Microsoft will collaborate on a joint product roadmap that:

  • Simplifies the initial deployment, hardware monitoring, power management, and performance optimization of HP ProLiant servers and HP BladeSystem infrastructure through deep integration between HP Insight Software and Microsoft System Center solutions.

  • Allows customers to achieve the full benefits of virtualization by ensuring that storage is a fully integrated part of the virtual infrastructure. The two companies will enable in-depth management of HP storage within a Microsoft System Center environment. In addition, by using the HP Virtual SAN Appliance for Hyper-V, customers of all sizes will be able to simplify virtualization roll-outs by repurposing direct attached server storage into shared storage resources.

  • Enables mid-market customers to take control of their server, storage, networking and clients devices as well as OS and applications from a single console by integrating elements of HP ProLiant management, HP Operations Center, and Microsoft System Center Essentials.

  • Ensure interoperability in heterogeneous data center environments through development of connectors between HP Business Technology Optimization software and Microsoft System Center portfolios.

  • Drives increased collaboration focused on application models and run books that that facilitate automated provisioning of complex, multi-tiered applications and automate response to changes in performance and availability of underlying hardware infrastructure.

  • Delivers dynamic management of virtual and physical networks, using a common set of management policies, by delivering support of HP Flex Fabric within Microsoft virtualization and System Center management products.

  • Enables Private Cloud implementations. HP and Microsoft Services will help customers transform their IT environments into converged, highly automated and secure infrastructures that deliver technology services on-the-fly, by integrating HP expertise in infrastructure and infrastructure management with Microsoft expertise in virtualization and management of Windows, Hyper-V and Microsoft applications.

“In the long term, the HP solution will reduce our annual total cost of ownership for our two data centers by 30 percent easily. That puts our payback at well under two years. We’ve taken a lot of the limits off of traditional IT. We can build and destroy virtual servers at will. And when you consider the easier learning curve and the benefits of having a single point of contact and a uniform way of getting support with HP, it’s pretty compelling.”
