Customer Scenario
Deploying multiple VMs on a single physical host increases the impact of unplanned and planned downtime as multiple servers are impacted each time a host server is taken offline. To take full advantage of server consolidation, you must address server availability to minimize downtime.
Server virtualization facilitates easier disaster recovery through server encapsulation. An entire server is now captured in a single VHD file which can be moved easily across different server platforms. DataKeeper replicates the VHD file for DR.
SteelEye DataKeeper and Windows Server Failover Clustering work together to address these concerns.
SteelEye Technology + Microsoft Solution
A highly optimized host-based replication solution
When looking for a way to minimize the impact of planned and unplanned downtime of Hyper-V host servers, Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) is the answer. However, WSFC alone does not address server availability in the event of a failure of your shared storage array. SteelEye DataKeeper Cluster Edition replicates virtual machines at the block level between heterogeneous storage arrays, eliminating shared storage as a single point of failure. A DataKeeper Volume resource replaces the physical disk resource in a Hyper-V WSFC configuration, enabling “shared nothing” Hyper-V clusters.
High Availability and Disaster Recovery
Hyper-V virtualization enables quicker, easier recovery of servers in the event of a disaster. The encapsulation of a server into a single, portable VHD files eliminates the need for complicated and costly bare-metal recoveries from backup in the event of a disaster. SteelEye DataKeeper enhances the Recovery Point Objective (RPO) by providing real-time replication of running VMs to the DR site. SteelEye DataKeeper Cluster Edition and WSFC enable geographically dispersed clusters, which provide the highest RPO and Recovery Time Objective (RTO) available for disaster recovery of Hyper-V VMs. Recovery in the DR site can be accomplished in just seconds! SteelEye DataKeeper can be used to replicate running Hyper-V VMs (VHD files) for disaster recovery purposes. When WSFC Hyper-V protection is not deployed, in the event of a disaster, virtual machines can be recovered in the DR site by using the replicated VHD files to commission new Hyper-V VMs.
