Granada Visual creates digital asset management system
Arkemedia provides digital asset management system based on Windows Media 9 Series for British broadcaster's clips service
Granada Visual, the division of Granada International responsible for the worldwide distribution of all Granada content, has launched a revamped clips service based on Windows Media 9 Series. Granada Visual last year appointed Arkemedia Technologies as business partner in the development of its digital asset management system.
"The creation of Granada Visual, and the implementation of a comprehensive digital asset management system, allows us to list, tag and retrieve vast quantities of material quickly and efficiently, ultimately providing a much better service to customers," says Amanda Deadman, general manager of Granada Visual.
"Up to now, our market has been predominantly the broadcasters and predominantly in the UK. But, over the past two years, we've been attempting to expand outside our core areas to attract both international customers and non-TV related customers, such as commercials, corporate video and retail television. For example, earlier this year, we signed a content supply deal with Vodafone whereby we supplied content from the latest series of [reality TV show] I'm a Celebrity
Get Me Out Of Here to their new video-enabled Vodafone Live! mobile service."
Deadman says the new technology makes it easier to target new work. "We sell moving images and we need our customers to see the images to sell effectively. This is where Windows Media 9 Series comes in," she says. "Windows Media 9 Series gives us the flexibility we need. It provides great quality images, without huge file sizes, so we can store a phenomenal amount of product. We can also make frame accurate searches."
With Arkemedia Technologies' ark-e-media software at its core, the system vastly improves the efficiency of the Granada Visual workflow processes by allowing the creation of a fully searchable visual database, designed to tag specific metadata to streamable clips. Additionally, the project allows the ingest of current programme databases and also interfaces with existing rights management software. In time, this information will be made available to customers via the Granada Visual website.
Launched in April 2002, Granada Visual provides a single point of entry to over 120,000 hours of footage from the libraries of all Granada owned companies.
