Use Mini Player Mode (Windows Media Player 10)

February 2005

Do you like to listen to music while you work, but feel that Windows Media Player gets in your way when you're using other programs? If so, you might want to try mini Player mode in Windows Media Player 9 Series.

By default, when you minimize the Player while in full mode or skin mode, the Player becomes a button on the Windows taskbar at the bottom of the screen, as shown in the following illustration.

While this gets the Player out of your way, it also prevents you from using any of the playback controls or seeing any information about the item that is playing. To perform these tasks, you have to switch back to full mode.

Mini Player mode solves this problem. When you enable mini Player mode and then minimize the Player, the Player shrinks and docks on the Windows taskbar as a toolbar. Unlike a taskbar button, the mini Player toolbar, shown in the following illustration, includes the most common playback controls (such as the Play and Volume buttons). It can also display visualizations and information about the currently playing item.

Note   Mini Player mode is only available if you're running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional.

Switching to Mini Player Mode

To switch to mini Player mode
  1. Right-click an open area of the Windows taskbar (such as below the system clock), point to Toolbars, and then select Windows Media Player.
  2. Click the Minimize button.

You only need to perform the first step once to enable mini Player mode. In the future, whenever you want to switch to mini Player mode, just click the Minimize button on the Player.

The mini Player has several playback controls, as shown in the following screen shot.

For more information about these playback controls, see Windows Media Player Help.

To go back to the default behavior of the Minimize button (switch out of mini Player mode), right-click an open area of the Windows taskbar, point to Toolbars, and then uncheck Windows Media Player.
